Davina's CV

PERSONAL PROFILE
I have a strong research background and experience in geography, remote sensing (Earth observation) and GIS based research for environmental applications all of which developed extensive skills in research, method development, conducting comprehensive literature reviews and teaching. I am particularly interested in offering my skills with SuperProf to students who require assistance in Geography (school through to degree level), Spatial Sciences (including remote sensing, image analysis and Geographical Information systems (GIS)), and Applied Mathematics (school level).

Research and post-doctoral experience at a number of academic institutions, including the University of Adelaide, has enabled me to develop experience in working in a team environment with researchers and stakeholders from a wide range of specialist areas in research, environmental and governmental organizations and well as non-experts and the general public.

I left my academic career three years ago to take time for myself to improve my health and wellbeing through yoga and meditation. I feel the time is now right to recommence the work environment in a part-time capacity, sharing knowledge and assisting others to improve theirs is a passion of mine, it is great to see the Eureka moments when students have understood the problem set.

EDUCATION

PhD in Hyperspectral Remote Sensing (Engineering & Physical Sciences Research
Council & Shell International Exploration & Production Industrial CASE Studentship)
Newcastle University, School of Civil Engineering & Geosciences, UK

Title: Hyperspectral remote sensing of canopy scale vegetation stress associated with buried gas pipelines.
β€’ Determining robust hyperspectral analytical techniques for remote detection of subtle vegetation stress associated with buried gas pipeline soil disturbance under challenging heterogeneous field conditions. Hyperspectral analysis of comprehensive field spectrometry data and hyperspectral airborne imagery determined the most effective wavebands for detecting vegetation stress associated with pipeline earthworks and its spatial characteristics.

09/1999-09/2000

MSc Topographic Science University of Glasgow, Scotland.

Awarded RICS Geomatics Division Prize for greatest personal academic achievement.
MSc Project Title: A comparative study of visualized Airborne Gamma-ray Spectra at various spatial resolutions and for various interpolation algorithms.

β€’ Used GIS, to qualitatively and quantitatively compare inverse distance-weighting, TIN and ordinary robust kriging algorithms applied to AGS data at various spatial resolutions to determine the most effective method of visualizing the data.

β€’ Courses studied: GIS tools, data and information quality, DTMs, map projections, national mapping organizations, remote sensing, land information systems, cartographic design, cartographic production, contemporary cartography, visualization, and photogrammetry.

09/1994-06/1996

MSc by Research in Coastal Geomorphology University of Guelph, Dept. of Geography, Ontario, Canada.

Visa scholarship awarded
MSc Project Title: The effects of pebble concentration on aeolian sand transport on a natural beach.

β€’ Developing field methods for capturing and processing anemometer and sand trap data. Presented research at two conferences in Canada.

β€’ Courses studied: Sedimentary processes in geomorphology, biotic processes and the biophysical environment, environmental resource evaluation.

09/1991- 07/1994

BSc (Hons.) Geography, Upper Second Class University of Huddersfield, West
Yorkshire, UK.

Final Year Project: Design, construction and testing of a sediment trap for shore erosion.

β€’ Courses studied: IS in geography, water resources, database management, environmental monitoring, resource management and environmental planning, environmental problems and policies in the European Union.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

09/2008 – 06/2015

Postdoctoral Research Fellow The University of Adelaide, School of Earth & Environmental Sciences

β€’ 06/2014 – 06/2015, Goyder Institute funded project, entitled: Researching environmental condition indicators to support the management of Lake Eyre Basin Rivers. Co-Leader of spatial component of the project to develop spatial indicators via remote sensing and GIS analysis for integration into the 2018 LEB Rivers Assessment.

β€’ 03/2013 – 06/2014, SAAL NRM funded project, entitled: Arckaringa and Peake Creek Baseline Survey: Detecting and monitoring vegetation extent and health associated with riverine flow regime patterns and GDEs.

β€’ 09/2008 – 06/2013 National Water Commission, SA DFW and DENR, SAAL NRM funded project, entitled: Allocating Water and Maintaining Springs in the Great Artesian Basin.

β€’ Conducting remote sensing and GIS based analysis of mound springs of the GAB. The research is focused on determining the capability of remotely sensed data, including satellite imagery, airborne hyperspectral imagery and digital aerial photography, to delineate and monitor the extent, composition and distribution of mound spring wetland vegetation. A robust and repeatable quantitative methodology has been developed to determine the sensitivity of mound spring permanent wetland vegetation to water allocations. This project has involved field work and vegetation assessment of the GAB springs.
