My teaching methodology is focused around the idea that learning is constructed through experience, and that effective learning requires understanding. This means that the learner needs to be actively engaged in the process of making sense of information. At school, content is already being taught in a particular way, and I believe tutoring needs to go at learning in a different way in order to maximise understanding.
This is simpler if we are interested in the subject, but in all cases, the teacher has to be able to intuit what it is that is preventing the learner from understanding something, and to explain things in a way that best suits the student.
I naturally try to do this whenever I am explaining anything. My goal is always to help others understand. To 'be on the same page', before trying to teach anything. I also believe in practice, reinforcement through the student explaining concepts back to me, analysing sample writing/responses together, and practical work - especially in primary school.
Hello! I am towards the end of a Masters of Teaching, and have previously completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Psychology and Art History. I am also completing an AMI Montessori Qualification. I have extensive tutoring and teaching experience, but have also worked in HR and recruitment. I am empathetic and understanding, as well as curious, open, and passionate about helping people truly UNDERSTAND what they need to know.
I have always loved English and writing, but can also tutor in other subjects, at both primary and high school levels: Maths, Biology, Economics, and study skills. I have also worked at Lindamood-Bell, an intensive literacy and maths program.
