My methodology is based on giving my students the tools with which to correct their own technique so that they can create a captivating performance using a bank of ideas and skills that we cultivate together and don't just end up feeling overwhelmed. I also place a strong emphasis on talking about the music my students like and encouraging exploration in to those areas. I feel singing is pointless if you don't have something to say, either through your own words or through someone else's in the form of a song, even if that thing is just singing around the house to yourself because you're happy. I like to add theory in occasionally, especially for people who are writing their own stuff, e.g. pointing to different types of scales and chords that can add a unique flavour to a song etc. Most importantly I want the learning to be mainly directed by the students interests.
I'm a songwriter who has been singing and playing the piano since I was six. I had piano lessons since I was 7 to about 12, I've had a long break but I'm still proficient in scales and chords as well as reading music. I also studied IB level music in high school and lived to tell the tale, as well as performing many times both as part of a group and alone. I started having singing lessons when I was 12 and have had several different vocal teachers all with different styles since then. I'm currently studying with a vocal coach as part of my degree, I was a composition major for two years and I switched to vocal/performance major this year. Separately from school I taught for a year at Fretvision in Canberra and I am continuing to produce my own music and videos to accompany whilst trying to gig as much as possible.
