Completely dependent on the student/child, the math topic and frequency of the lessons. I truly believe that teaching math is about letting the student/child explore the topic him/herself, lead by the teacher. This often starts with a brief explanation of the concepts. Later, easy questions are made together and later on without help. Iterating this process, the difficulty can be increased gradually.
I started teaching math to high school students when I was in high school myself. I started teaching kids in my neighbourhood and later also at an additional lessons company. During my time in University, I also taught bigger groups and gave lead to 3 person teams to teach math to classes.
If travel time is significant, I might ask for some compensation for that.
