I do believe that the best way to learn a new language is not by books or memorizing vocabulary...but by really experience moments that you can speak such as order food, buy tickets, support your soccer team and so on. First I like to assess the students knowledge by asking them for a small demonstration. If they're more interested in written communication I'll ask them to write one or two small essays, stories of life and stuff like that.
