I have a friendly, warm approach to tutoring, and prefer to be seen by my students as a friend rather than a tutor. This works well for children or those who may be shy, enabling them to feel more comfortable and enjoy playing piano rather than see it as a chore.
Every one of us is unique, and so it is essential that an intuitive learning approach that focuses on the individuality of the student is employed. Raising the awareness of your inner self is the best way to open the floodgates on your innovation and ability.
I try to keep my lesssons reasonably basic until I ascertain my students skill levels. From that point I can then decide how to approach music theory and playing ability. I've always found that being a patient listener is the most important tool in a teacher's toolbox.
My teaching method is that of beginning from the basics, Rudiments, Time Signatures and Rhythms. All three of these are what help to make you a better drummer, and allow you freedom whilst you play. A credible resource that has contributed to the major development of my learning is a book known as 'Rhythm Section Drumming'. This would used as a key resource and approach towards teaching, along with many others insightful notes.
I teach reading of notes and chords as well as improvisation for more advanced students. For younger students I provide a reading method that will enable them to move to other instruments should they choose to at a later time.
I am extremely thorough in making sure the student can read music, so I put a lot of hard work in at the beginning, teaching the notes like the alphabet and not allowing the student to rely on memorising the notes!
