Studying music, I have learnt to enjoy myself when playing the instrument. My aim is to teach beginners the fundamentals of playing, giving them the skills they will need to master the instrument. When I teach, I make my lessons practical, making students engage with musical materials suited for every individual students.
Using a Reggio Emilio philosophy of utilising the student's interests to advance in playing and reading music for guitar and percussion.
I try to keep my lesssons reasonably basic until I ascertain my students skill levels. From that point I can then decide how to approach music theory and playing ability. I've always found that being a patient listener is the most important tool in a teacher's toolbox as well as a sharp sense of a students confidence.
I base my lessons on what my student wants to learn. I ask them what their goals are in the topic of study and aim to create lessons and teach in order to help them achieve those goals over time. I always want to make sure I am catering to their needs and wishes in terms of what I'm teaching.
Musical knowledge should be built up like a lasagna. It takes time and practice to put it all together, so I like to acknowledge that and make the process as fun as possible. The passion for music fuels the learning just as much as the learning fuels the passion. We'll assess your level and objectives and take it from there.
I take a pragmatic and step by step approach to learning. My teaching style is based on the needs of the student and lessons are tailored to each student's individual needs and requirements, regardless of age. I have experience teaching students of all ages, young and old and I am able to adapt my teaching and communication style to suit.
I initially learned music through method books supplied by the teacher, which I hated because I couldn't see the point, and when I got a guitar teacher that taught me how to play songs that I liked and paired it with music theory I loved it and that's what I have been doing ever since - for myself and for my students.
First things first i will ask the students what made them get interested to learn Guitar and what kind of music they like and want to play and learn. Thru it i can integrate materials to use to fit and keep their interest to study further rather than for filling their free time.
I like to get in tune with my student's individual passion and motivation. The universal concepts of music can be taught through many examples, so we can direct our lessons through your prior interests. I have an excellent grasp on technique and I ensure all my students are using their instruments in the most effeffective and ergonomic way.
I assess the level the student is at and then base my teaching on that personal approach. Lessons would be for 50-60 minutes a week, and would be based on what the student has learnt in the previous week and weeks. That learning would involve previous lessons, practice at home and reference to a guitar teaching book or books at the appropriate level for the student.
I base all my methods on analysing the students skill and mindset to see what types of techniques are required to learn and keep them focused and motivated with ideas and inspiration that I've experienced over the past 20 years.
I'll teach the basic lesson of guitar with basic theory. As we progress, I'll be teaching Major and minor chords as well as fingerstyle patterns and strumming patterns. Student will need to practice everyday at least 20-30 minutes to become better and better.
I give practical knowledge that you can always use in your music career. You will learn how to play your favourite songs on guitar, how to make up guitar solos on the spot, and some music theory.
My teaching method follows a very intuitive music mindset, I encourage my students to follow their own musical journey and use my knowledge to aid them in whatever path they wish to follow. Whether you would like to learn sight reading and theory, jazz improvisation, or would like to simply know how to play chords and sing along, I will be 100% devoted to helping you achieve your goal.
