I like to set a certain song to teach my students. This way I can teach the techniques first and then teach how to implement them in the song of their choice. For example if I was teaching a jazz song I was so the techniques needed within the genre and then help them implement the technique. This way the student can see their own progress after each session.
I focus my singing teaching heavily on vocal technique. I believe having good technique and vocal support ensures a more rounded sound and a healthier voice. I tailor my teaching in accordance with age, however only through how I describe the techniques. The core principles and the mechanics of how to use the voice is what I teach to all students.
