I am convinced that students need to see the relevance of what is being taught to them and how it affects their lives.
The syllabus outcomes for the relevant subject(s) and stage(s) are the basis of all lessons. However, I feel that these must be seen in the context of “why do I need to know this?”
To this end, I have built up a very large library of teaching materials, resources to reinforce subject matter and its relevance and anecdotes to illustrate key concepts. Most materials are real world examples of uses of the information being presented, to spark interest and enthusiasm, for the subject matter.
Students are assessed and questioned regarding the areas where reinforcement and even perhaps re-teaching of concepts are required. Knowledge, Science skills, Practical skills and processing of information are key areas. Scientific method, examination technique, independent thinking and long answer writing skills are also taught.
The aim is to engage and enthuse students in order to maximise academic performance and to enhance their understanding, engagement with and appreciation of the world around them.
I am a High School Science Teacher with over 30 years experience and current accreditation, to teach in NSW High Schools.
With considerable HSC marking and teaching, experience I have achieved excellent outcomes for HSC Biology and Earth and Environmental Science students on a regular basis.
In addition, Cert. lll I.T., Rural industries and Agriculture subjects, Junior Maths and even Music are some of the areas where I have clocked up significant teaching experience.
During my most recent teaching work, I have had the privilege of mentoring quite a number of interns in science teaching. I found this to be an exceptionally rewarding and satisfying experience.
