I base my classes one on one, with the student viewing/listening a film/a song for homework which we then dissect together. One on one is not essential, students can bring a friend if it makes them comfortable, and in fact it will often motivate students to learn if they have another person to encourage them. I hope to give a deep understanding of the language as well as its culture as one is useless without the other.
I am a film and languages student with a passion for Latin American cinema and music, and the incredible way you can learn about the region's politics from both. I hope to teach the Spanish language using these sources as guides. My intention is to introduce not only language lessons and concepts, but various cultural concepts that come from the region as well.
In 2017, I completed a film in Havana, Cuba, that explored the notion of Cuba as a masculine country. The two women dressed as men to give educational lectures and shows that discuss gender, misogyny, homophobia and gay rights.
During my time at RMIT, where I completed my Diploma of Languages, I tutored students of Spanish, helping with their learning and comprehension of the language. What I found was that students find it hard to learn vague concepts without context. I hope that my films and musical choices will provide that context which was lacking.
