I teach Visual Arts from Years Group 7 to 12. I gained students' success in the Shaun Tan Art Award, the Young Originals and Young Australian Art Awards (National Competition).
I am having success in engaging challenging students in Visual Arts activities. As example, in 2017, I had an indigenous girl in Year 9 who rarely attended classes and was very disengaged in all learning areas. I built her confidence in painting through a well structured task, guidance and constant motivation to the extent that she has produced a few outstanding dot paintings reflecting her culture and which have been praised by the school’s administration and the staff of the student services. Her works have been chosen for display in the Young Originals 2017 & 2018 and in addition, she was awarded twice in Melbourne in the national competition of Young Australian Art Awards 2017 & 2018. She is now very proud of what she is achieving and is very thankful that I made her discover her “hidden’ talent and even intends to pursue a career in painting later.
Having worked with children of different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds including students from Asia, New Zealand, Africa, Europe, and Indigenous students, I understand and respect cultural diversity. I practice inclusivity and capitalise on the richness of each culture by developing programs focused on creating artworks that reflect the students’ cultural backgrounds. After following two courses on Introduction to Ngaluma Culture and Cross-cultures, I have gained a greater understanding and knowledge on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages, cultures and histories. Due to the strong attachment to their cultures, I plan activities that are relevant to my Indigenous students’ context and I make them share their histories to other non-indigenous students and staff members, in view to promote greater understanding and respect towards Indigenous cultures. As a result of my respectful approach towards their culture my senior Indigenous students respond more positively in their learning and produce outstanding works reflecting their identity.
In fact, I have been successful in engaging many challenging students by having a ‘how can I help you’ approach and putting into practice the principle of ‘Mind Matters’ that the best mental health strategy is the one that prevents issues from arising in the first place. The strategies recommended for dealing with challenging students in the educational article ‘Pedagogy with a personality’, reinforce my professional knowledge and practice.
I expand my repertoire of teaching strategies through DVD/Video viewing, outdoor sketching, photography and excursions to Arts Centre. Being a qualified mathematics teacher and knowledgeable in Interior Design/Decoration, I devise cross-curricular activities in my professional practice.
I have a Masters of Education in the arts, a Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Visual Arts, Teacher's Diploma in Visual Arts and a graduate certificate in Mathematics teaching.
I am a passionate and enthusiastic senior teacher with many years of teaching experience in primary and secondary settings. I am currently a permanent full time Visual Arts teacher but has qualification and teaching experiences in Mathematics lower secondary schools. My career goal is to be an outstanding leading teacher.
